How did I began...
My first computer was ATARI 500 with few games and Turbo Basic where I tried to became great developer. Ha-ha-ha... Very funny. In High school we were honoured by 286's. What a piece of machine at that time — 8 MHz and with turbo it was running screeming 12 MHz. My first PC was 386 SX running on 33 MHz with 4 MB's of RAM and 40 MB of Hard Drive. I had HP LaserJet 4L printer so I experimented with pre-press (with 300 dpi).
First software that I encoutered of was CorelDRAW 3.0 (well, actually DeluxePaint, but let's get serious). I was working with Corel until version 5.0, but then I was introduced to Freehand (owned by Aldus at that time, and from 5.0 onwards was developed by Macromedia). Working with that software I combined Photoshop 2.5, Page Maker or QuarkXPress. Although it hasn't been developed for PC many years (stopped with version 4.0 I reckon), with version 7.0 it started a new era. I'm using that piece of binary code since then. With the release of Adobe Collection I also replaced Page Maker and QuarkXPress with InDesign.
And today...
Introducing their graphical software collection Adobe made a huge hit. Creative Suite is now a starting point for all my creative movements. Photoshop is absolutely must and Illustrator is best for vector design and PostScript, that is PDF. For layout I used, as I already said, QuarkXPress and Page Maker but InDesign jumped over both of them (well it killed Page Maker actually).
From wide variety of 3D modelling and rendering software long time ago I used Truespace, and today I'm trying to learn Maya. This application is so powerfull that I have a feeling I'm not moving from scratch at all. It has really steep learning curve and I still point and clik within Trial academic version. That's why for jobs that have to be created with that kind of software I use Cinema4D.
As the time goes by majority of my work is beeing transferred for web. I still use Photoshop and Illustrator duet but final layout is encoded in DHTML/CSS with Macromedia tools. I use mostly Dreamweaver. Flash not that much.
I was really serious about buying Mac but it's limitations (price) persuaded me to stay with PC. Today I use Intel.
